Your doctor is a very important part of your Medicare journey. Before you choose what Medicare plan to enroll in, you should check with your current doctor to see if they accept Medicare patients. Read through the sections below to see the steps you should take to ensure you have the right coverage and primary care physician.
How to Make Sure Your Doctor Accepts Your Medicare Plan
Most Medicare Advantage plans are either HMO- or PPO-based, which means they have networks of doctors and facilities. If you choose Medicare Advantage coverage, you’ll need to make sure that your doctors accept the plan. This is especially true of your Primary Care Physician. Many Medicare Advantage plans require you to choose one. Since they’ll be the doctor you use the most, take the time to check that your Primary Care Physician accepts any Medicare Advantage plan you’re interested in.

If you use non-network providers, your plan may not provide coverage and you’ll have to pay 100% of the cost. You can check to see what plans your doctor accepts by searching online at the plan sponsor’s website, or by calling the plan company and speaking with member services.

If you’d rather have help finding a plan your doctor accepts, chat with one of our licensed agents. We can help you find a plan that will work with your doctor.
If I Enroll in Medicare Advantage, Can I Keep my Doctor?
Not all doctors take all Medicare Advantage plans, so it’s important that you check on this before you enroll. Look for a Medicare Advantage plan accepted by your doctor, or choose Medicare Supplement Insurance if you want to avoid networks. For comprehensive help finding and comparing plans, contact one of our licensed agents.
Doctors and Medicare Supplement Insurance
If you enroll in a Medigap plan, you’ll have maximum flexibility to see any doctor you choose. There are no network restrictions, and no referral requirements with Medigap coverage. Just make sure your doctor sees Medicare patients, and be sure to bring both your Original Medicare card and your Medigap card when you visit.
